What is leisure and recreation?

Dating back to the fourteenth century, leisure and recreation were popular words amongst the superior upper class. The few who had time for "leisure" and "recreation" were known to be free of obligation. These complimentary words go hand in hand in several ways. Leisure is the ability to have unrestricted time where you are able to fill this time with anything you want. Recreation is how you spend this so-called "unrestricted time." A king with many slaves to do his laborious tasks for him is said to have time of leisure. This opportunity of freedom is replaced with recreation. He may relax as his activity of recreation, or perhaps watch a game of jousting for enjoyment. Either way, this king has unlimited time for recreational activities.

  1. So if technology has reduced our need to work, and we are more efficient, why don't we have more recreational time? We don't need to hunt/farm anymore and our society doesn't barter like in the 14th century. So why are we still working the same amount of time in most cases?
