What is recreation and what is leisure?

 What is Recreation and Leisure?

Recreation is something we do during our free time.  It is a form of leisure.  Does that mean that as long as we are not working we are in leisure? If you are incarcerated then you do not have a lot of work but you do have a lot of free time. Does that mean prisoners are in a constant state of leisure? If your job is doing something (professional athlete) that most people do for fun, does that mean your job is a form of leisure?  These are all things we will think about over the next year.

How would you define recreation and why?

  1. When I think of recreation and leisure, a few main components pops into my mind. For an activity to be leisurely and recreational I think it has to be something that the individual want to do, in other words there are no exterior motives for doing the activity and that they are willing to give up otherwise free time to do. To answer the questions, Just because you are working does not mean you are in leisure. For something to be considered leisure in my head, it has to be something you do on your own time. I don’t believe prisoners are in a constant state of leisure because they do not have a choice but to sit around all day. A professional athlete, I’m sure, doesn’t consider their job leisure; they have to work long and hard just like other people do for their jobs. Yes of course they love what they do but I bet if you ask them, their first choice wouldn’t be to get up at 5:00AM everyday to do their training.
